She pulled her hair up from the water The waves had just come crashing over She was right on time To take my mind and start it over I’m driving in the summer with the seat soaking wet Radio loud headed west Got nowhere to be I’m free as the wind Life is waiting up around the bend She was right on time To take my mind and start it over Radiator smoking on the side of the road Said that old car had been good to know Had her feet on my dash and a look in her eye I knew how to walk but she learnt me to fly She was right on time To take my mind and start it over

Magic 04:30
Let’s get ready for the magic The night is young and the feeling’s right I got a little buzz but Baby that’s all right Let’s get ready for the magic I been looking for a lover worth her weight in gold I been holding my breath when it comes time to roll You know this night could break us down And I’m ready to break, ‘cause I’m already bent Love ain’t nothing but a paper doll Trying to hold on in the face of the wind

Way down yonder in the well, a secret I’ll never tell Way down yonder in the well The son of a dynasty I made it far from the tree The wayward son of a dynasty I fell for a girl in the town who lived on a road Daddy didn’t go down I fell for a girl in the town She wore a lily white dress her dark skin it did caress She wore a lily white dress Down at the courthouse square we let ‘em all stop and stare Down at the courthouse square He was a friend of mine till the words he said broke heart and mind He was an old friend of mine It ain’t just sticks and stones some words cut right to the bone It ain’t just sticks and stones I found him in the light of the moon And my .44 hammered out a tune Till blood ran black in the light of the moon We danced by the light of the moon While sharecroppers sang a working tune Two young lovers bound in the light of the moon

Heaven 03:26
A bar I love on the outskirts of town Right past all that stuff they’d love to tear down They welcome me in to my favorite stool Hand me a bottle, Son keep your cool I reach for my wallet like anyone should The barkeep says keep it here you’re money’s no good I look in the mirror expect to sprout wings and fly Better get out of heaven before I die Band hits the stage they cut into a tune Till the whole place around me it starts to move While all at once tonights barroom queen Sits right beside me and laughs and leans I take her hand and we waltz to the floor The way she moves gets me right to the core I don’t know the reason I don’t want to ask why Wanna stay here in heaven till I die In a flash it’s cheers, cheers You don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here Off to a little wooden house with an RCA Hear Charlie Patton singing as she lights my way Our shadows dancing by candlelight Two young kids in love, at least for tonight If I wake from a dream you’ll hear a grown man cry Get me out of heaven before I die
5.
Lone Ranger 03:51
She wanted me to be the Lone Ranger One night in her bedroom As a boy I lived for television on Saturdays Cartoons, cowboys, showing me the way I still check under, getting into bed most nights Made mistakes but I was brought up right She wanted me to be the Lone Ranger One night under a prairie moon Met her at a party in the month of May Excuse me getting out of each other’s way We shared some tequila she lost one of her shoes The sun came up there was nothing left to do She wanted me to be the Lone Ranger One night in her bedroom That December I admit it was quite a surprise When she tied the cloth right over my blue eyes But love is a secret at least two people know Yippie ki yi yay - Yippie ki yi yo

Roll black sugar river sweet jubilee Carry that sugarcane To where the Delta melts into the sea You gonna cut that cane while the buzzards fly Stacked taller than a man who’ll never leave this world alive Screen door lost it’s screen some years ago Poor woman done lost my love When the sweet Cachaça done laid me low I hear her fateful moan through the walls of time I see her footprints lead up to my door from the waterline Bury me in sweet molasses I done all I can That river that brought me here Let it take me on to the Promised Land Roll black sugar river sweet jubilee Carry my body down To where the Delta melts into the sea

Stone 04:03
I am a stone - cast off in a field alone - I am a stone I was a wall - when I was only a child - yes I was a wall Now I am a word - written in the heart of a babe in the womb - I am a word I am a seed - watered by want and desire - yes I am a seed I am alive - written out loud on the protest sign - I am alive We are one light in a sky full of stars A dream as brief as a spark So take this dream, make your mark - We are I am a tide - gathering strength in a storm - yes I am a tide I have arrived - in a moment that will define your life - I have arrived I am a voice - shouting loud from the rooftops - I am a voice I do believe - one day every soul walks free - I believe I am a stone - cast off in a field alone - I am a stone

Summerline 03:18
I been lost without you nights are dark and lonesome The sirens wail so red and blue City streets abandon all hope when landing My old heart is ready to get home to you Where the sun it always shine The fish jump on the line The trees in summertime Shade me and you A thousand miles apart we, look to the sky above we Think of growing wings to fly on home Where the water turns to wine The clothes swing on the line The trees in summertime Shade me and you The star we named for ever stands in the sky The satellites circle around our hearts While we both grow wings to fly on home

about

Launched a little more than twenty years ago in Raleigh, North Carolina, Chatham County Line built a devoted local following on the strength of their genre-bending live show—an intoxicating blend of bluegrass, folk, country, and rock and roll—before breaking out internationally with their 2003 self-titled debut. In the years to come, the band would go on to release eight more critically acclaimed studio albums, top the Billboard Bluegrass Chart four times, collaborate with the likes of Judy Collins, Sharon Van Etten, and Norwegian star Jonas Fjeld, earn two gold records in Norway (where they were also twice nominated for the Spellemannprisen, Norway’s equivalent of a Grammy), and share bills with everyone from Guy Clark and Lyle Lovett to Steve Martin & Martin Short and The Avett Brothers. NPR hailed the group as “a bridge between bluegrass traditions and a fresh interpretation of those influences,” while Uncut lauded their “powerful melodies and gorgeous harmonies,” and Pitchfork dubbed their music “timeless.”

The band’s latest release, Hiyo, marks the band’s first release since the departure of their longtime banjo player and serves as something of a reintroduction to the roots stalwarts, complete with new sounds, new collaborators, and a whole new lease on life. Recorded at Asheville’s Echo Mountain studio with co-producer/engineer Rachael Moore (Kacey Musgraves, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss), the collection finds the trio—Dave Wilson (lead singer/guitarist), John Teer (fiddle/mandolin) and Greg Readling (bass/pedal steel), embracing change at every turn, experimenting with fresh sonic palettes and innovative approaches to their core instrumentation. The songwriting remains classic Chatham County Line here—rich, evocative tales of love and heartbreak, joy and sorrow, righteousness and revenge—but the settings have evolved to incorporate synthesizers, drum machines, and more electric guitar and percussion than ever before. Given the group’s string band roots and decades spent singing around a single microphone, the results are nothing short of revelatory, taking an enduring sound and injecting it with a thrilling new spirit of discovery and vitality.

Chatham County Line Raleigh, North Carolina

Strange Fascination marks a turning point in CCL's steady growth and evolution. It's the final release with co-founding banjo player Chandler Holt, the first line-up change since 2001, and the first w/ drums on all songs.

The core — Dave Wilson (guitar/vocals), John Teer (mandolin/fiddle/vocals), and Greg Readling (bass/pedal steel/piano)—now add percussion to its line-up - Dan Hall on drums.
